What Is An Assistance Dog?
Assistance Dogs are highly trained to support people with disabilities and have the power to transform lives by providing physical and emotional support to enhance confidence and independence for their humans.
Different Types of AD
In the UK, the role of AD's extends beyond the familiar Guide Dogs and Hearing Dogs. While these specialised dogs transform the lives of individuals living with visual or auditory impairments, the scope of Assistance Dogs encompasses a diverse range of vital support for those facing a multitude of challenges including medical, neurodivergent, or psychiatric conditions and illnesses.
How AD are trained
Some Assistance Dogs are fully trained by organisations before being matched with recipients. Others are pet dogs trained by their owners to a very high standard. Although it is not a legal requirement, many people opt to take a public access test (PAT) with a training provider as evidence of their dog's training status.There are a number of organisations offering this test that are accredited by ADUK.
Public Access Test
For those wanting to take the Public Access Test (PAT) their dogs must reach a high standard of training and remain calm and focussed around distractions. They will be asked to demonstrate support tasks that help mitigate a disability, such as collecting or picking up items, finding an exit, giving deep pressure therapy, or 'blocking' to maintain personal space. The PAT test is reassessed annually.
It's important not to distract these dedicated dogs as they work tirelessly to assist their owners, while ignoring external distractions.

Elevate your training with Assistance Dog Training Lessons! Whether you're a beginner or looking to master advanced exercises and task work, our tailored weekly lessons in sets of 10 will take you to the next level. With a focus on consistency, Bobs recommends weekly lessons or a minimum of two lessons per month, to see real progress. Train in person at your home, in a venue, or even in public spaces (following an initial assessment).
Online training is potentially available if it is considered suitable for desired outcomes.
Training from the pre-vaccination stage is available on the Puppy ADiT programme. Details coming Soon.

3. Darwin Dogs ADiT
Darwin Dogs work in partnership with disabled people to train their own pet dogs to help with a diagnosed mental health condition including anxiety, depression, Bipolar, and PTSD. As well as, Assistance dogs for adults with autism.
